Alex Lustgarten February 5, 2007 I think that winning the battle with yourself if much, much more important than winning the game against your opponent. If you win the game well good job, you just won. If you won against yourself then that is a much better, because now you know who you are and what you’re made of. Also if you win against yourself then you can do whatever you want to do within reason. People may want you to do something that you don’t want to do. If you already won against yourself then you can just say no. Also if you want to do something and other people don’t want you to do it, if you already won against yourself you can just go and do it.
I think that winning competition with your self is more important because when you set goals for yourself you can beat the opposing teams. If you know what you can do, then you can accomplish more things. I do sports where I do not have to worry about others, but about me. It helps me set my goals for me. This is like what Alex said that you know who you are.
I think that competition with yourself is more important than competition with the opposing team because when you win and meet your goals, it inspirers you to make new, bigger, and better goals. I think that when you accomplish a goal for yourself it helps you to win against the opposing team. Lastly competition with yourself can only make you better, but when you there is a greater chance of you failing.
I have to agree with each of you. I have never really played on a competetive team; running is really an individual sport. Still, it took me a while to be happy with my times and not my place during a race. Somehow, setting goals for yourself and achieving them are more authentic. You know if you did your best; you don't know if the team you bet gave it all.
All of you make very good points. Competing against yourself and always striving to be better and better is important and valuable. This will lead to success in all areas of life! I do think, however, that you are overlooking the feeling of working with a group of people as a team and achieving success. Like Mrs. Leonard, I competed in individual sports as a student: swimming and track. However, I now play rugby, and when my team went from being average to being one of the top sixteen teams in the country, it was a pretty incredible feeling. The relationships that are formed when a group of people have common goals and are willing to work hard to achieve them is pretty incredible.
Suzie February 6, 2007 I believe that competition with yourself is more important than competition with the opposing team. You have to learn to love yourself first, and only then can you learn to love others. This also means that you should strive to make yourself better first, before you think of competing with the opposing team and making them better. If you are the best you can be, it helps makes you the best in a competition against the other team.
Wining in a competition is much more important in the book and in the world. If you focus on the competition with the opposing team you will get side tracked and not focus on you and your team. Take Rita for instance she worked so hard to save her money to achieve to go to the camp she had her eye on a competition through herself. Then she took every advantage at that camp to improve herself as a player and be ready to go through competition against a team. Since without having competition with yourself you cannot succeed at competition against a team. This is because everything starts with the choices you make do you choose to succeed that goal that you are so destine to achieve or do you just slack off and never look back, and that’s when you can achieve competition against a team.
